Q+A With Andy and Deb

Q&A with Deb and Andy: Their Daily Routine, Home Life, and Favorite Picks from The Postcards Collection

We had the chance to chat with Deb and Andy to learn more about their day-to-day life, the heart of their beautiful home, and which pieces from our Postcards Collection have become their favorites. Known for creating a home filled with warmth and personality, Deb and Andy’s approach to family life and design is effortlessly inspiring.

Daily Routine Deb and Andy’s mornings begin with a sense of calm and connection. They both value a slow start to the day, enjoying coffee together on their patio as the sun rises. For them, mornings are a time to plan the day ahead and savor quiet moments before the hustle of family life kicks in. Their routine strikes a balance between work, family time, and a love for the outdoors.

A Glimpse Into Their Home Their home tells a story of thoughtful curation, blending timeless pieces with contemporary touches. “We love mixing natural materials with modern design,” Deb explains, highlighting how they’ve created spaces that feel open, inviting, and connected to nature. From cozy living areas to a vibrant kitchen, their home is a place where family and friends come together effortlessly.

Favorite Pieces from The Postcards Collection When asked about their favorite Black Salt Co. pieces, Deb and Andy are quick to point out the Rico Chair and Panati Hallway Table. “The Rico Chair instantly brings a tropical vibe to any space, and the handwoven details are truly one of a kind,” says Andy. Meanwhile, Deb adores the Panati Hallway Tablefor its creamy white concrete design, which adds a subtle, coastal touch to their entryway. These pieces help create the relaxed, island-inspired atmosphere they love.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and where do you live?

We live on the mid north coast of NSW in a small coastal town called Wallabi Point. It’s 3.5 hours north of Sydney and it’s a beautiful area with stunning beaches. It’s quiet here which is nice.

All of our older kids have moved out now leaving just Andy, myself and our youngest son who is 13 at home. We also have 2 baby Jack Russell’s who are energetic and fun!
You were contestants on The Block 2019 Oslo series, what was your experience and lessons that you could take away from it?

It was such an incredible experience. On The Block you are suddenly in a world you don’t understand and you have to find your feet fast. There isn’t much you can really do to prepare except be fit and healthy. Even the most experienced interior designers, builders etc would still have to work out how to operate under those circumstances as it’s just pure chaos the biggest lesson was that we can all do more then we think we can and being pushed out of your comfort zone can create invaluable personal growth.
Since appearing on The Block, you have now started DNA of Design. What is DNA of Design all about and how did it come to life?

It’s our interior design platform and we recently renovated 2 houses on the Gold Coast which we filmed and shared via a digital renovation series . We are currently working on a third project which will be released soon.

It started when we were approached by our first two clients who we connected with via The Block. They had toured the Blick houses the year of our series and liked our style. They reached out in early 2020 to ask us to renovate their homes.
Family is such an important part of your world, what is something you all like to do together?
We definitely love our family time and we are suddenly all to aware how that time flies by so fast. With the big kids now living out of home. We all love the beach and something we’ve enjoyed together for many years are our regular family holidays, especially to Coolangatta in QLD. It’s where Andy and I first holidayed together and we continued the tradition with our kids. We’ve been twice this year!
Do you have any favourite spots to visit or favourite things to do in your hometown?
There’s a reserve by the beach that we live near. It’s a very significant cultural place which is very special. We live on Biripi country and Andy and our kids are Indigenous. They love being on country and there is a family tree within the reserve along with many other special cultural stories and artefacts. It makes it extra special to live close by. Lots of local Indigenous families love the reserve and visit regularly, especially in summer. It’s very cool.
Our Postcards Collection is all about bringing the ‘holiday to your home’, do you have any favourite holiday memories?

Along with our memories of visiting Coolangatta we always really love the December school holidays which we spend at home. We call it a staycation and we explore our own area. The best memories are of the kids coming through the door after the last day of school and the pure joy they felt being on summer holiday, its unforgettable. We are near the beach so it’s always weeks of surfing, swimming, jumping in the pool and showers outside!
What do you think makes a home, a home?

Having things you love around you but also making sure you can really use your space and be comfortable. Pick furniture you can relax and unwind on. We love to shut the front door at home, fling open the back doors and relax. We have slouchy comfy couches, soft textured rugs and comfy outdoor furniture too. We want to feel like we are on holidays at home all year round.

If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would it be?

Coolangatta of course. However, we recently visited Fiji for our brothers wedding. We hadn’t been and we loved it. Our youngest son was so taken with the kindness of the Fijian people he wants to move there! We will be going back really soon.

What are your home and styling tips?

Do what really you love, you have to live in the space so make it yours. I love to keep things simple, cohesive and soft. Muted colours and timber work for me, you can change cushion covers and even art if you want to change things up occasionally.

From an interior design point of view I think scale is so important. When selecting furniture, art and rugs make sure you get the scale right. A common mistake in interior design is getting a rug that too small. I would be generous with rug size, it can transform your room.

What are your favourite Black Salt Co pieces from our Postcards Collection?

Okay here goes, this will take up some space because it’s a stunning collection and I love it all!

Pantai Coffee Table, those curves!
-Pantai Hallway Table, this is the perfect piece to make an impact but not overwhelm a space. So sophisticated and soft looking. Even though it’s cement!
-Desa hallway table, perfect for tropical coastal style
-wave side table is a stunner. A perfect bedside table. I adore the shape and white matte finish
-Palma Chair, gorgeous
-Samudra pendant has that authentic handmade look which adds unique character to a room.
-Rico Lamp, I love it and I’ve never seen anything like it before. The colour, texture and size are all perfect.
-Desa Dining Chair and bar stool, I love these. They’re a beautiful timber tone and the curved shape is great. I also love the woven rattan for that tropical coastal look.

I could honestly go on and on as I really love the entire range. I could happily furnish an entire home from this range!
