Q&A with Melissa Tonkin: Her Daily Routine, Home Style, and Favorite Picks from The Postcards Collection

We had the pleasure of catching up with Melissa Tonkin to get a glimpse into her daily routine, the beauty of her home, and which pieces from our Postcards Collection she absolutely loves. Known for her impeccable taste and eye for design, Melissa has created a serene, stylish space that reflects her love for both function and beauty.

Daily Routine Melissa’s day begins with a quiet moment of mindfulness—a cup of tea on her patio, overlooking her sun-soaked garden. She shares how this peaceful morning ritual sets the tone for the rest of her day, helping her stay grounded before diving into work and family life. Melissa's approach to her home is all about creating spaces that encourage relaxation and calm.

A Peek Into Her Home Her home is a reflection of thoughtful living, where each room tells a story. Inspired by nature and her love for travel, Melissa has curated a collection of earthy textures, soothing colors, and handmade pieces. “I wanted my home to feel like a retreat,” she says, and it’s clear that her space is designed with this in mind—every corner feels inviting, with an emphasis on warmth and comfort.

Favorite Pieces from The Postcards Collection When it comes to Black Salt Co., Melissa has her favorites. “The Desa Coffee Table is a standout for me,” she shares. “The hand-woven details are so intricate and bring a unique texture to my living room.” She’s also a fan of the Palma Chair, which she describes as “the perfect blend of tropical vibes and sophistication.” Melissa loves how the Postcards Collection pieces enhance the relaxed yet refined atmosphere of her home.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and where do you live?
I am a mumma of 3 with a love of styling and creating beautiful interiors from Perth Australia.

What’s your daily routine?
At the moment my days are full with a busy toddler.
I had completely forgot how all consuming they are at 18months so my styling work has definitely taken a bit of a backwards step at the moment. Im definitely missing the creative outlet my work provides but i’m looking forward to pouring it all into our new house which we start building in a few months.
Do you have any favourite spots to visit or favourite things to do in your home town?
We love doing day trips into Fremantle. Whether it's exploring the main streets and many amazing places to eat or a lazy arvo down at south beach where the vibes are always chilled and the sunsets are something else. Fremantle really is our happy place.
Our Postcards Collection is all about bringing the ‘holiday to your home’, do you have any favourite holiday memories?
Swimming in the crystal clear waters of Mauritius and exploring the many breathtaking gorges in Karajini.
If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would it be?
To be honest I haven't travelled much. I had my first child at 23 and travelling has never been a priority amongst it all. This is something that I am definitely keen to change in the future. I've always dreamed of visiting Italy and explore the the Amalfi Coast.

What are your home and styling tips?
Don't follow trends, stay true to you and what makes you happy. Only have items in your home that bring you joy or serve a purpose.
Shuffle things around often, I find that moving things around and playing with pairing different items together in different spaces has a way to keep you in love with your home.
What do you think makes a home, a home?
A home is nothing without the people who live there. The home’s soul should tell a story, give you a feeling and contain pieces that share little snippets of all those who live within its walls and their journey.
What are your favourite Black Salt Co pieces from our Postcards Collection?
Oh I love it all but my favourite would have to be the Pantai Hallway Table.
