Q+A with Dominique Cumming

Tell us a little bit about yourself and where do you live?
We are lucky enough to live in the remote town of Kalbarri, Based 6 hours north of the city we are living in a little remote pocket of coastline where the desert meets the beautiful red cliff faces of the Indian ocean. Surrounded by National Park, there is nothing but wild desert landscapes all around us. Our coastal villa is situated only 100m from the most popular snorkel and surf spot.
What’s your daily routine?
Most days involve waking up in our beautiful bedroom space, curated by Black Salt Co. Making a coffee while walking down to the beach to check the ocean conditions. From there our days often consist of surfing empty waves or diving on the amazing ground around home in search of dinner. Myself and partner who is a seaman by trade- Love cooking with local and foraged ingredients from the land and sea. We could spend hours in the kitchen making dinner for friend and family it's just what we love.
Do you have any favourite spots to visit or favourite things to do in your home town?
The coastline is absolutely breathtaking here! We love walking down the coastal red cliffs and hanging out in one of the many rockpools.
Our Postcards Collection is all about bringing the ‘holiday to your home’, do you have any favourite holiday memories?
One of my favourite holiday memories is from a surf trip to the stunning coastline of Northwest Australia. The journey began with a road trip through the rugged Outback, where the vast, red landscape stretched endlessly under the clear blue sky. The air was filled with anticipation as we drove closer to our destination, a hidden gem known for its pristine beaches and world-class waves.
We set up camp near a secluded beach, the sound of the waves crashing in the distance. The mornings were magical, waking up to the sunrise painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, the first light glistening on the water. With surfboards in hand, we headed out to catch the early waves, the cool ocean spray on our faces.
The waves in the Northwest were incredible, challenging yet exhilarating. Each wave makes you respect the ocean and its power, feeling the energy of the waves propelling us forward. Between waves, we explored the coastline, discovering tide pools teeming with marine life and cliffs offering breathtaking views of the endless horizon.
If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would it be?
I've always dreamed of visiting the Mentawai Islands, a paradise for surfers tucked away off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The allure of this remote archipelago is irresistible, with its crystal-clear waters, lush tropical landscapes, and, of course, some of the best waves in the world.
What are your home and styling tips?
I am a strong believer in natural fibers. Use natural materials such as wicker, rattan, and bamboo for furniture and decor. These materials add an organic feel to the space which is calming and inviting. Other materials like Linen and Cotton heap make a home feel airy and fresh. I also cant go past wood elements. Include light or whitewashed wood furniture and decor pieces to evoke the elements of nature around our home.
What do you think makes a home, a home?
Keep things clutter free, only placing decor in our home that means something special to us or reminds us of what we love.
What are your favourite Black Salt Co pieces from our Postcards Collection?
We love the Desa Rattan Bed head, This piece is so unique and acts as the art in the room.
